Thanks to Adam/midendian, there is documentation of the final hour of August 16, 2008. To close down the night, I busted out the magnum of 2000 Clonakilla shiraz viognier that Tim Kirk signed for us back in October 2002 (we bought it at the winery). He was gracious enough to do so even after pointing out that he generally doesn't sign things except for charity - I was embarrassed to have asked at that point but there was no turning back.

The wine was everything I had hoped for: beautiful and rich with the first hints of decay you get in older wines. It's a medium-bodied wine light years away from the massive Aussie shiraz that's in vogue these days: this is the anti-Blue Eyed Boy (chris_gardner may remember that one from his birthday party last year). This is a wine that manages the tricky business of being in two places at once: it's both earthy, dusty, and ever so slightly barnyardy and at the same time floral, with the scent of night blooming jasmine and honeysuckle drifting in and out of focus.
