Possible clue.

At the National Museum of Australia, I think it was - or perhaps at Parliament - I noticed a small mention of how New Zealand didn't join the Australian confederation, apparently due to issues of race. Now, nothing was explained further, but might that be at the root of why NZ feels so much more comfortable than Australia? There seems to be a very strained relationship with the original inhabitants of this country, and a completely unresolved way of dealing with the history of European occupation and settlement, which I didn't feel at all in NZ.

Hmmm.
