Planning planning planning

Dan's out at the bears' night in Seattle, and I'm at home doing one of the things I love to do most: travel planning.

We're flying down to San Diego next Friday night for no good reason other than we were able to get a very cheap flight on Alaska. Fortuitously, my brother Tim and his wife Gilda have a C-section scheduled for this Tuesday, so we hope to see our nephew/niece next Monday, Martin Luther King Jr Day. However, in the meantime, I'm not sure what we're doing. I definitely have to get up to Long Beach to see Chris... but is there anything else going on in the Southland we shouldn't miss? More importantly, who's got a guest bedroom we can abuse? Or do we check out Priceline?

I'm also in the process of settling plans for Thanksgiving. For as long as I've earned more than ten dollars an hour, we've been in the habit of getting out of the country over Thanksgiving break. You get two vacation days for free, flights are cheap, tourist crowds are minimal, and everything costs less. Over the last several years, we've explored Amsterdam and Cologne with Chris and Brian, gone snorkeling on Oahu, wandered around Argentina, made it to Patagonia, discovered the incredible dullness of the Big Island, and whooped it up in Andalucia. This year, I was able to finally, FINALLY get rid of my Delta frequent flyer miles and book flights to Istanbul and Athens. So, it looks like two cities, eight days. My parents were talking about a day trip to Cappadocia from Istanbul, but that doesn't look very feasible [hell, it's an overnight bus ride...]. Still, if you've been to either of those two cities, let me know if it's worth it to stay there for four days, or if there's anything we shouldn't miss?

The other big trip up this year is to South Africa, which killed all of our remaining American AAdvantage miles, which is awesome. We'll be down there for two and a half weeks, hopefully during prime wildflower season. I'm a bit overwhelmed trying to piece together an itinerary, so I've asked one of the Cape Town bears who's also a travel agent to give us a leg up. Again, if you've been to SA and know anything about it, I sure could use some tips here. Yeah, I know I want to go drinking in Stellenbosch, but other than that, who knows?

Now, it's off to bed to curl up with a stack of South Africa travel guides from the library. I hope Sophie doesn't drool on them too much...
