I know, crazy, right? Would it help any if I mentioned that the best selling German author of all time wrote Westerns, even though he only visited the USA once, long after he'd written all of his most famous novels?
Now I see that the University of Massachusetts has set up a lending library for East German Westerns:
In a sense, that's the missing link from my university education. I have a degree in English and German literature, but the English literature part of it included an awful lot of film, thanks in part to folks like cbertsch. The German literature part of it included a lot of Westerns, as well as East German literature - it's a shame I didn't know about these films at the time.
For what it's worth, part of me thinks that The Apple is the last truly East German movie ever made. Yeah, I know it was filmed in Westberlin, but even so: it just had that special GDR-feeling.
