I think I may have figured it out.

Here's what seems to work (for a fare of $471.36):

Jan 1: PHX-FRA
Jan 2: FRA-TXL

Jan 10: TXL-FRA
Jan 10: FRA-DEN (via IAD)
Jan 10: DEN-SJC

The thing is, the weird routing is only there to trick the United online system into writing a ticket that can't realistically be flown: the timing is such so that I would have only 40 minutes to make the connection in Frankfurt, even though it would realistically take at least 40 minutes just to get from the airplane to the United departure gate for Washington - to say nothing of the horrendous security queues I saw in Frankfurt airport earlier this month.

So, should I do this? Does anyone have any experience with writing tickets that your ass can't cash are not actually flyable? (I'm guessing that once at the airport they would sort it all out and put me on alternate flights, or else the ticket would automatically reconfigure itself somehow before I departed...)
