Yes, I thought I'd try something other than Dell for a change of pace.

To sum up:

1. Low-end consumer desktop with CRT display. hp $546, Apple $870. Very similar machines.

2. Prosumer desktop with LCD display. hp $1281, Apple $1413. Very different machines - this is a Media Center PC with remote control, PVR functionality, etc. Seems clear that Apple's pricing on the iMac is very competitive.

3. Low-end notebook computer. hp $1030, Apple $1500. Surprisingly, the hp laptop is lighter and has a higher-resolution, widescreen display.

4. High-end notebook computer. hp $1360, Apple $2282. The Apple is smaller and lighter, but the hp notebook has a HDTV-compatible display.

Not compared:

5. High-end prosumer desktop. 20" widescreen iMac, hp Media Center PC with 19" display. Probably about $2,065 either way, but the iMac's got a better display. If you want something like this in a PC, you'd better go to Dell, not hp.

6. System with huge display. Dual 2.5 GHz G5 with 23" display, hp Media Center PC with 23" display. Probably about $5,440 vs. $4,000.

7. Laptop with huge display. 17" PowerBook, hp zd7000. $3,045 vs. $1,700. PowerBook's lighter and more elegant, but the hp has some interesting build to order options.
