Does anyone else around here ever run into that problem? For whatever reason, I'm deeply uncomfortable around effeminate/queeny/queer/gay men.
I suspect it has something to do with cultural norms of masculinity, and the low level underlying notion that although it's OK for women to be masculine, because after all ours is a male-dominated (chauvinistic?) society, there's something really wrong with men who are feminine, because why would you want to be a woman if you could be a man?
I'd be interested in the literature on this subject. I imagine that gender studies has something to offer in this field; sadly, I'm not conversant in the literature, so I wouldn't know where to begin. But I'm sure there's some feminist criticism or something in that area that writes of male hostility towards effeminate men?
My apologies if this offends anyone - it's kind of a sensitive topic and I'm not terrifically good at expressing myself plainly here. It's just that I'd like to better understand why this topic bothers me so much.
