State of the Mac: March 2004

Inspired by this article, this article, and themonkeybear's recent upgrade [thanks to his AppleCare extended warranty] to a 15" PowerBook [to replace his failing PowerBook], I thought I'd have a look at some current Apple vs. Dell pricing in notebooks. Bear in mind: I'm comparing the ugliest, nastiest Dell to a relatively sweet PowerBook here. That's why the Apple costs 160% more than the Dell laptop - a full $1,425 more. As always, comparisons like this don't mean a whole bunch, but they're fun for me to put together. Yes, a more apt comparison would probably be to the iBook or perhaps a fancier Dell laptop, but hey.

As always, pricing is for where I live: Redmond, Washington. This includes 8.75% tax on the Apple, and about $62 in shipping and tax for the Dell. Given that Dell's pricing varies from day to day, it might not be the same if you go to spec it out yourself.
