Vest Fest 2005 + Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD

This Friday will mark my 2½ year anniversary at Microsoft. I've just run the numbers, and it looks like my Microsoft stock options are now worth nearly $120.

Somehow, knowing that most of my coworkers' options are entirely underwater still isn't giving this event any sort of frisson whatsoever. $120? Yeah, it's free money, and free money is good, but somehow I'd hoped for more.

If any of you have been following the whole Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD saga, here's all you need to know: To grossly oversimplify, the main difference between the two is simple - they differ in the software used to provide interactive features, e.g. the menus you see when you play a disc. HD-DVD uses Microsoft technology; Blu-ray uses Java [BD-Java™, to be specific]. So, ultimately, the fight is at least in part simply Microsoft vs. Sun.
