le wine blog™ - tn: 2000 bonny doon syrah 'le monstre'

This has been sitting in my cellar for three years at this point; it's a Bonny Doon wine club selection which was made in France, presumably under supervision by Randall Grahm. Unlike most shiraz, this has an absolutely beautiful smell about it, which reminds me of port, or possibly even raspberries and white pepper. In short, it's almost exactly what you'd expect a French syrah to smell like, and it's fantastic.

In the mouth, it definitely tastes sweet, but not sugary - it's what the French would call sucrosité, and yet it doesn't finish sweet, but rather on kind of a gentle, almost burnt sugar note, with barely perceptible tannins and a lingering aftertaste of sugar cookie and strawberry rhubarb pie.

It's awesome. Thank God there are still three bottles left downstairs - I'm guessing it's going to be even more lovely in another three years.

What a wonderful way to start the weekend.
