This Tuesday, I accompanied the exceptional Jeff/jhitchin to the Timberline for bear karaoke night. Listening to all kinds of bears sing all kinds of songs [OK, well, maybe not all kinds, but rather whatever was available from the karaoke CDs present], I found myself itching to get up there and sing something myself, preferably Beck, Marc Almond, Jacques Brel, or maybe even Frank Zappa. Unfortunately, though, there wasn't even any Brel available, so I stayed quiet, which of course was probably good. No sense embarassing yourself in front of friends, right?

Anyhow, I got to talking with Jeff about [surprise] a lot of music that night, and as might be suspected, I wasn't familiar with most of the songs folks sung that night, much less the original lyric of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Similarly, a lot of the songs I'm familiar with were perhaps unfamiliar to Jeff et al, so I find myself sitting at my desk this morning ripping huge stacks of CDs in preparation for putting some of them together as a sampler of the kind of stuff I imagine myself singing.

Right now, I'm listening to Marc Almond sing "You think you're Marlon Brando, but you're more like Mae West" over accompaniment by Jim 'Foetus' Thirlwell. That might be a bit much, but I'll move on from here... I'm hoping Laibach singing 'The Final Countdown' amuses. :)

I hadn't realized it, but HDCD is now a Microsoft product.

If you have a copy of a recent Beck album such as Mutations, a Windows XP PC, a high end sound card, and a good stereo system, you should be able to hear the difference. It's pretty damned good!
