One of the last hints of my past as a dot commer just arrived via UPS: twelve 375 mL bottles of the 2000 Monte Bello, which were purchased as futures in early 2001. That's right, it took two years for them to arrive. Even more frustrating, the labels suggest that this wine will only begin to show its true promise in 2008. Patience is indeed a virtue.

At $33 a bottle, this stuff was definitely far from cheap, but I'm kind of pleased to see that its retail value is already something like $76 - at least that's how much the 1997 now costs. I suppose by the time I actually crack open one of these tiny bottles, they'll be worth $100.

But is the wine any good? I have absolutely no idea. I hope it is, but I won't know for five years.
