What I learned today.

- I have an awful lot to learn. Bring on the XML, XSL, XSLT, Xerces, Xalan, and about a dozen other things then I know some, but not nearly enough, about. Yikes.

- The camera used to take employee pictures for badges is possessed by Satan. It takes the most amazingly ugly pictures. My picture, well, I look like I'm wearing Michael Bolton-style hair extensions. Then again, maybe I can convince myself I really look like Legolas. Still the prettiest!

- This is going to be an easy commute most days. 8 miles each way, ~15 minutes on federal holidays, maybe twice that weekdays.

- Mac OS X is, um, interesting. Spent the day resurrecting a blue and white G3 from beyond the grave - it's a 400 MHZ single processor beast with plenty of RAM. First impressions: the throbby spastic dock is somewhat aggravating, it's different enough from Mac OS 8 to be somewhat disorienting, the remapping of command-N to "new Finder window" instead of "new folder" is irksome, the lack of a power key on the keyboard is upsetting in a very primaeval sort of way, the new optical mouse isn't that much better than the hockey puck from my old iMac, and the way text is displayed is surreal. It looks fabulous, but it almost doesn't look like a computer. I'm not sure whether to like it or not. I guess I kind of like it, but I don't like the idea of paying thousands of dollars extra for a slower machine with no apps &c. just to have a fabulously displayed Read Me file done by Acrobat.

More later.
