Wine tasting! ETAs! Stress! Perth dealers! And so on.

Well, I'm sitting in the Air New Zealand lounge at Sydney International Airport. Wow, what a long day. Got up at 0530, drove towards Sydney. Stopped at a cemetery in Paterson and a church in West Maitland - Dan found more info on his dead Australian relatives. Pretty cool! Once in town, went to Oxford St to check my mail - got a really cool wine magazine in the mail from Neville and Tim - and went to Betty's to have soup. And guess what? Jeff Meade was there with two buddies from SF - Robb Bell and his other half. Wow. That was funny. I was really happy to see those guys. Then, it was off to Russel's to say hello, help with the cryptic crossword (technically, I couldn't help at all, but hey), stow some more stuff in the shed, and then go to the airport.

At the airport, it turned out that our visas to Australia have expired. Oops. I misunderstood them. Duh. But at least we're on the plane to New Zealand soon, and we won't technically have violated any of the conditions of the visas. Once in NZ, I need to apply to the Australian embassy to get an ETA, or electronic travel authorization, for our last nine days or so in the country, which, I trust, will Not Be A Problem. Still, one more detail to worry about. Sigh. In the meantime, Dan's phone is ringing off the hook with weird offers from Aussie used car dealers to buy the Land Cruiser. It's too early - we can't sell it til next Thursday - but at least it sounds like we can get a bare minimum of A$27,000 for the truck. Plus, if something goes utterly fucked in NZ, we know it's parked at Russel's and he has a key (along with our wine collection and all our luggage), so at least we could in theory remote-instruct Seumas during his holidays (yeah, I know that's exactly what he wants to do on his holidays) to put what where and save our sorry no-visa-renewing asses. :)

OK, time to get going. 90 minutes until takeoff. In the meantime, we have:

  • NV Deutz Marlborough Cuvee methode traditionelle
  • 1999 Church Road sauvignon blanc
  • Some Aussie chardonnay of some description
  • 2001 Wynns Coonawarra cab sauv merlot
  • Another nondescript Aussie shiraz
I'll be the one drinking sauvignon blanc and Deutz with both fists. Mmmmmmm.

  • It's July 2013.

Remember when I wrote a lot on LiveJournal? Yeah, me neither.

It took ten days to clear Canadian customs and make it to San Diego, but Dan just installed the replacement thermostat for our crappy wine cabinet…
