What's your take?

The ongoing controversy around the removal of transsexuals from the ENDA has been fascinating. Specifically, I think it's interesting to watch squirm-inducing debates pop up from all sides about whether or not it's OK to protect the majority of people without changing the status quo (= unprotected status) for a relatively small minority. Me, I'm not comfortable with it - it feels something like refusing to board a life raft unless everyone has a place (which seems a waste given that you could fit most - but not all - everyone on the raft).

I'm also grimly fascinated by people daring to discuss transsexuals in general - on some level, of course they have nothing to do with "us" - same-sex attraction isn't really the same thing as being born into a body of the wrong gender. And yet there's something I feel a great kinship with: the notion that we are all born with but one life and that we should have the right to live it as best suits who we feel we really are (I may not need surgery to publicly perform the gender role that I feel uniquely suits me, but I do need similar legal protections to do it without getting locked up as a sexual deviant). You know?

How do you feel?
